Toothache Treatment provided by in Bells, Jackson, Milan & Lexington, TN at

Female patient consulting with a dentist about severe tooth pain during an emergency dental appointment in a clinic. If you’re dealing with a toothache and you live in or around Bells, Jackson, Milan, or Lexington, TN, Premier Dental Center can help you get out of pain and figure out what’s actually causing it.

A toothache almost always means something needs attention, whether that’s decay, an infection, a cracked tooth, or gum issues. Our team sees toothache patients across all four of our West Tennessee offices, and we’ll work to get you scheduled quickly.

If your pain is severe, won’t go away, comes with swelling, or wakes you up at night, that’s a sign to call us right away rather than wait it out. Mild discomfort that comes and goes still deserves a look, but it isn’t the same kind of urgency. Our Jackson office holds 7am to 7pm hours on Mondays and Tuesdays, which gives us extra capacity for same-day emergency dental visits.

We’ll find the cause, explain it in plain terms, and put together a treatment plan you can actually decide on. No pressure, no surprises.

Why Your Tooth Hurts and What It Could Mean

Dental X-ray highlighting an infected tooth root canal with inflammation in red.Tooth pain is your body’s way of saying something is wrong. The specific way the pain feels often points toward the cause, but only an exam and an X-ray can confirm what’s actually happening inside the tooth.

Common causes our team sees in Jackson and across our other offices include:

  • Tooth decay – A cavity that has reached the inner layers of the tooth can produce sharp pain when you bite down or eat something sweet, hot, or cold.

  • Infection or abscess – A throbbing, persistent ache that may come with swelling, a bad taste, or fever often points to a tooth infection or dental abscess that needs prompt attention.

  • Cracked or fractured tooth – Pain that flares when you bite a specific way may be a sign of a broken or cracked tooth.

  • Gum disease – Tender, swollen gums and pain along the gumline can indicate periodontal gum disease rather than a problem with the tooth itself.

  • Exposed dentin or recent dental work – Lingering sensitivity to temperature can follow a new filling or crown, or it can show up when enamel wears thin.

  • Sinus pressure – Upper back teeth sometimes ache because of sinus inflammation rather than a dental issue, especially during allergy season.

None of these are something you can sort out at home with much certainty. The pain pattern gives us hints, but the source needs to be confirmed before we treat it. That’s why an in-office exam matters even when the discomfort feels mild.

When to Call Right Away vs. When You Can Wait

Call us today if the pain is severe and constant, if your face or jaw is swollen, if you have a fever, if a tooth is loose or knocked out, or if pain is keeping you awake. Those are signs the situation needs attention now rather than next week.

For dull, intermittent discomfort that doesn’t wake you up and has no swelling, scheduling a regular appointment within a few days is usually appropriate. The risk in waiting longer is that small problems become bigger ones, and a tooth that could have been saved with a filling sometimes needs a root canal instead.

Your Toothache Care Team

Our team of doctors at Premier Dental Center has been treating toothache patients across West Tennessee since 1979. Across the practice, our doctors hold credentials and continuing education in laser dentistry, advanced cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry, implant dentistry, IV sedation, oral conscious sedation, and the management of fearful patients. That breadth matters with toothache cases because the root cause varies so much from patient to patient, and the right treatment depends on what we find.

When you come in with tooth pain, you’ll be seen by a doctor who has handled many similar cases. Our offices use digital X-rays across Bells, Jackson, Milan, and Lexington to get fast, accurate diagnostic images, which is essential for figuring out exactly what’s causing your pain. More about our team on our About Us page.

What Happens When You Come In With a Toothache

Most toothache appointments follow a predictable sequence. The treatment that follows the exam depends on what we find.

Step 1: Quick Triage and Comfort

When you arrive at one of our four offices, our front desk team prioritizes you for evaluation. If you’re in significant pain, we don’t make you wait through a long check-in process. We get you back to a chair, listen to where the pain is and how it feels, and start making you more comfortable right away.

Step 2: Exam and Digital X-ray

Our doctor examines the area visually and uses a digital X-ray to look at what’s happening beneath the surface. Decay, infections, cracks, and bone loss all show up clearly on a digital image, and we can see the result on a screen within seconds. If 3D imaging would help with a more complex case, we use that as well.

Step 3: Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Once we know what’s causing the pain, we walk you through what we found and what your treatment options are. A simple cavity may need a dental filling. A deeply infected tooth may need a root canal. A tooth that can’t be saved may need to be extracted, and we’ll talk through tooth replacement options if that’s the path forward.

Step 4: Treatment That Day, When Possible

We can often handle the full toothache visit in one appointment, especially during our Jackson office’s 7am to 7pm Monday and Tuesday hours when we have extra time built into the schedule. If we need to schedule treatment separately, we’ll stabilize the pain and book you for the procedure as soon as our schedule allows.

What You Can Do at Home Before Your Visit

While you wait for your appointment, a cold compress on the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time can help with swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers used as directed on the label can take the edge off. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth, avoid very hot or very cold foods, and don’t place aspirin directly on the gum, which can cause a chemical burn.

For patients who feel anxious about dental work, our sedation dentistry options can make the appointment far more comfortable.

Benefits of Treating Your Toothache Promptly

A male patient smiling and interacting with a dentist during a consultation, with advanced dental imaging equipment visible in the background.Coming in early matters with toothache, and our team in Bells, Jackson, Milan, and Lexington is set up to make it easy. The reason is simple: dental problems get worse, not better, when they’re ignored.

When we catch tooth pain early, the underlying issue is usually still small enough to address with a conservative procedure. A cavity caught early can become a filling instead of a root canal. We can seal a small crack before it splits into a full fracture. Early-stage gum disease responds to scaling and the soft tissue laser care we use at our practice, which is far less invasive than treatment for advanced periodontal disease.

The other benefit is straightforward comfort. Living with a toothache is exhausting, and the longer pain continues, the more it affects sleep, eating, work, and mood. We often hear from patients afterward that they wish they’d come in sooner. Our Jackson office’s 7am to 7pm hours on Mondays and Tuesdays were built so that patients can be seen before or after work without taking time off.

  • Lower Treatment Cost – Catching a problem early almost always costs less than treating it later, and our team provides estimates before any major work begins.

  • Better Long-Term Outcomes – Early treatment preserves more of your natural tooth structure, and our membership plan helps patients without dental insurance keep up with regular preventive care.

  • Reduced Risk of Infection Spread – Dental infections can affect surrounding tissue. Our soft tissue lasers address gum-related infections with less bleeding and faster healing.

  • Faster Return to Normal – Same-day treatment is often available at our Jackson office during 7am to 7pm Monday and Tuesday hours.

None of this is meant to scare you. It’s meant to make a simple point: a toothache is information, and acting on it sooner gives you more options than acting on it later.

Why Choose Our Team for Toothache Care

Premier Dental Center has been serving West Tennessee since 1979. Across our four offices in Bells, Jackson, Milan, and Lexington, our team treats patients of all ages with the same standard of care, which makes it easy for families to schedule together at whichever location is most convenient.

Our doctors hold practice-wide credentials in IV sedation, oral conscious sedation, and the management of fearful patients. For someone who has been putting off a toothache because of anxiety about treatment, that matters. We don’t rush patients, and we’ll talk through your comfort options before we start.

We invest in technology that makes diagnosis faster and more accurate. Our soft tissue lasers handle gum-related toothaches with less bleeding and faster healing. Our digital X-rays show what’s happening below the surface within seconds. 3D imaging is available when a more complex case calls for it.

The other thing worth saying: we’re a long-tenured local practice, not a chain. Many of our patients have been coming to us for decades, and several of our team members grew up in the communities we serve. Toothache care goes better when your doctor already knows you.

Toothache Treatment Cost and Financing

Cost is a fair concern with any dental treatment, and we’ll be straight with you about it. The cost of treating a toothache depends entirely on what’s causing the pain. A small filling for an early cavity costs much less than a root canal and crown for a deeply infected tooth. We can’t give you a meaningful estimate until we’ve examined the tooth and identified the source.

Most dental insurance plans cover diagnostic visits, X-rays, and a portion of common treatments like fillings, root canals, and extractions. Our front office team will verify your benefits and walk you through your estimated out-of-pocket cost before treatment begins. We list the plans we accept and the financing we offer with our insurance and financing options.

If cost is a worry, please tell us. We work with patients to find a treatment plan that addresses the immediate pain first and stages additional work over time when needed. We also offer financing through Cherry, Sunbit, and CareCredit, and our membership plan can help patients without dental insurance access care at a lower out-of-pocket cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go to the ER or the dentist for a toothache?

For most toothaches, a dentist is the right choice because the ER isn’t set up to actually treat the tooth itself. The ER can prescribe pain medication and antibiotics if there’s a serious infection, but they’ll send you to a dentist for the actual repair. Go to the ER only if you have severe swelling that’s spreading toward your eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a high fever with the tooth pain. Otherwise, call our office to be seen.

Does a toothache always mean I need a root canal?

No. Many toothaches turn out to be cavities that can be treated with a filling, cracked teeth that need a crown, or gum issues that respond to periodontal care. A root canal is typically only needed when the inner pulp of the tooth is infected or irreversibly inflamed, which is one of several possible causes. The exam and X-ray tell us which path applies to your specific tooth.

What can I take for tooth pain before my appointment?

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, used as directed on the label, are usually the first step. Cold compresses on the outside of your cheek help with swelling. Avoid placing aspirin or any pill directly against the gum or tooth, which can cause a chemical burn to the soft tissue. If you have a medical condition or take other medications, check with your physician about which OTC option is safest for you.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

Sometimes the pain fades for a while, but the underlying cause almost never resolves without treatment. A common scenario is an infected tooth that stops hurting once the nerve dies. The pain is gone, but the infection is still there and will eventually flare up worse than before. If your toothache disappeared after several days of significant pain, that’s actually a reason to come in sooner, not later.

Can I be seen the same day for a bad toothache?

Often yes, especially at our Jackson office where we hold extended 7am to 7pm hours on Mondays and Tuesdays for this reason. Same-day availability at our Bells, Milan, and Lexington offices depends on the day’s schedule, but we do our best to fit urgent toothache patients in. Call the office closest to you as early in the day as possible to give us the best chance of getting you in that day.

Does dental insurance cover toothache treatment?

Most plans cover diagnostic visits including the exam and X-ray, and they typically cover a portion of common treatments like fillings, root canals, and extractions. Coverage varies by plan and by the specific procedure your tooth needs. Our team will verify your benefits and provide an estimate before treatment begins. We list the plans we accept with our insurance and financing options.

What if my toothache is from a wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth that are erupting, impacted, or partially erupted often cause significant pain at the back of the jaw, sometimes with swelling. The treatment is typically wisdom teeth removal, and our team performs this procedure with IV sedation available for patients who prefer to be more deeply relaxed. We’ll evaluate your wisdom teeth with a panoramic X-ray to confirm what’s happening.

I’m really nervous about the dentist. What do you offer for anxiety?

Our practice offers both oral conscious sedation and IV sedation for patients who need more than reassurance to get through an appointment. Our team has continuing education specifically in managing fearful patients and has helped many people address dental problems they’d put off for years because of anxiety.
