Dental anxiety is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. For some people it is a low hum of dread; for others it is enough to put off care for years. Either way, our goal is to meet you where you are and help you get the treatment you need without the visit becoming something you fear.

We approach this two ways: with how we communicate and pace your care, and, when it helps, with sedation options that let you relax through treatment.

Those sedation options are one part of our broader sedation care, and here we focus on how they, along with a calmer overall approach, help anxious patients get the treatment they need.

What Dental Anxiety Looks Like

Dental anxiety shows up differently from one person to the next. For some it is a racing heart in the waiting room or trouble sleeping the night before. For others it centers on something specific: the sound of the drill, the feeling of instruments in the mouth, a strong gag reflex, or a fear of needles. Some people had a bad experience years ago that never quite faded. None of these is unusual, and none of them is something we judge.

Why It Is Worth Addressing

The hard part about dental anxiety is that avoiding the dentist tends to make the eventual visit bigger. A small cavity that could have been a quick filling becomes something more involved when it waits, which only feeds the fear. Staying current with routine care, starting with a straightforward dental exam, is usually far easier on an anxious patient than facing a long-delayed problem. Breaking that cycle is most of what we are trying to help you do.

Your Sedation and Comfort Team

At Premier Dental Center, anxious patients are in experienced hands. Dr. Jimmy Moss, whose bio details his training in IV sedation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and a focus of his work has been caring for fearful patients using IV sedation.

For patients who prefer a lighter approach, Dr. Caitlin Rudsenske has pursued continuing education in oral conscious sedation, which is taken as a pill before your appointment. More on her bio. Having both options under one roof means we can match the level of relaxation to what you actually need rather than offering a single solution to everyone.

Whichever path fits, we make that choice with you in person, after reviewing your health history. We do not recommend a specific sedative or dose without examining you, and we will walk you through exactly what to expect before anything begins.

How We Help Anxious Patients

A dentist showing a female patient her dental X-ray results on a screen, discussing treatment options during an exam.Helping an anxious patient is not only about medication. A lot of it is simply how the visit is run, and for many people the communication side does most of the work.

We Explain Before We Act

A large part of dental fear is the unknown, so we tell you what we are going to do before we do it, in plain language, and answer questions for as long as you need. Surprises are what tend to spike anxiety, and we work to remove them.

We Go at Your Pace

You set signals with us, like raising a hand to pause, so you never feel trapped in the chair. We can break treatment into shorter visits, take breaks, and stop when you need to. Knowing you can stop often makes it unnecessary to.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For moderate anxiety, oral conscious sedation is a prescribed medication taken before your visit that leaves you deeply relaxed but awake and able to respond. You will feel calm and drowsy, and many patients remember little of the appointment afterward. Because it lingers, you will need someone to drive you home.

IV Sedation

For higher anxiety or longer procedures, IV sedation delivers medication through a vein, which allows a deeper level of relaxation that can be adjusted during treatment. Dr. Moss administers it, drawing on his specific training in IV sedation, and the team monitors you closely throughout. This is conscious sedation, not general anesthesia, so you are not fully unconscious, though you will likely recall very little. You will need a ride home afterward.

Benefits of Addressing Anxiety

You Get Care You Have Been Putting Off

For patients who have avoided the dentist for years, the biggest benefit is finally getting through a visit, and our explain-first approach plus sedation when you need it is what makes that first one possible. Once it is behind you, the next ones are usually easier, and the problems that were quietly growing get addressed.

Treatment Becomes More Manageable

With the right communication and, where appropriate, sedation, a long or complex appointment can feel far shorter and less stressful. Procedures that once seemed out of the question become something you can sit through.

Your Overall Health Benefits

Oral health is tied to the rest of your body, and untreated problems do not stay put. The same approach that gets you through treatment makes routine cleanings and exams approachable too, so you can actually keep up with them, which protects more than your teeth and lifts the background stress of a problem ignored.

An Honest Note

We cannot promise to erase anxiety, and we will not pretend to. What we can do is give you tools and options that make treatment feel doable, and most anxious patients find that is enough to get the care they need.

Why Anxious Patients Choose Us

What anxious patients tend to value most about our practice is that the comfort is built on real training, not just reassurance. Since 1979, our offices across Bells, Jackson, Milan, and Lexington have cared for nervous patients, and the doctors who handle our sedation have specific backgrounds in it: Dr. Moss in IV sedation, with membership in the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and Dr. Rudsenske in oral conscious sedation.

We are also honest about what sedation is and is not. It is conscious sedation, chosen in person after reviewing your health, never recommended sight unseen. You will always know what is happening and why, and because your records are shared across all four offices, the team already knows your history and your comfort preferences wherever you choose to be seen.

Sedation Cost and Insurance

Sedation is generally an added cost on top of the dental treatment itself, and what it runs depends on the type of sedation and the length of your appointment. We go over those numbers with you ahead of time, so there are no surprises, which matters all the more when you are already anxious.

Dental insurance coverage for sedation varies and is often limited, so we verify your specific benefits before treatment and tell you what to expect out of pocket. Our insurance and financing options include third-party plans through Cherry, Sunbit, and CareCredit if you would like to spread the cost out. If you are uninsured, ask about our membership plans, which include cleanings, exams, and a discount on additional treatment.

Schedule Your Visit

If anxiety has kept you from the care you need, the first step can be a simple conversation, no treatment required, just a chance to tell us what worries you and hear your options. Call us at 731-300-3000 or schedule an appointment online. We will see you at any of our four West Tennessee offices. Our Jackson location is at 80 Exeter Rd, Jackson, TN 38305. Addresses and hours for the Bells, Milan, and Lexington offices are on our Locations page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you judge me for avoiding the dentist?

No. Dental anxiety and long gaps in care are common, and we see them often. Our job is to help you move forward from where you are now, not to comment on the past. Telling us what worries you simply helps us plan a visit that works for you.

What are my options if I am nervous about treatment?

We rarely jump straight to sedation. For many patients, clear communication and going at your pace are enough; when they are not, we step up to oral conscious sedation or IV sedation. The right level is decided with you in person, and our sedation page walks through each option.

Is dental sedation safe?

Sedation is widely used in dentistry and is considered safe when it is matched to your health history and monitored properly. We review your medical history and medications first, and our IV sedation is administered by Dr. Moss, who is specifically trained in it, with monitoring throughout. We will discuss any risks that apply to you before you decide.

Will I be unconscious during sedation?

No. Both oral conscious sedation and IV sedation are forms of conscious sedation, so you stay able to respond, including using the stop signal we set up, even while deeply relaxed. This is not general anesthesia; you are never fully put under, though many patients remember little of the appointment afterward.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, and we encourage it if it helps you feel at ease. If you receive oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, you will actually need a companion to drive you home, since the effects linger after the appointment. Arrange that ride before your visit.

What if my fear is something specific, like needles or gagging?

Tell us what the specific trigger is, because it changes how we plan the visit. There are ways to work around a strong gag reflex, ease needle anxiety, and reduce the sounds and sensations that bother you, and sedation can soften all of them. The more we know about what sets off your anxiety, the better we can prepare.

Does insurance cover sedation?

Sedation is usually billed separately from the dental work itself, and coverage for it varies and is often limited, so plan on at least a partial out-of-pocket cost. Because it is a separate charge, we can estimate the sedation portion specifically before you commit. We verify your insurance and financing benefits ahead of time, and financing is available if you want to spread the cost.

Can you really make the visit comfortable for me?

We cannot promise to erase your anxiety, but for most patients the mix of clear communication, going at your pace, and sedation when it fits is enough to get through the care they need. If even that feels like a lot, we can start smaller, with just a consultation or a cleaning, before any real treatment. The honest first step is a conversation.
