Do You Need to Add to Your Orthodontic Work After Wisdom Teeth Erupt?Orthodontic treatment can be a long process, and it is only practical to worry about the result of your treatment and how it will be affected by your wisdom teeth erupting. The short answer to the question is no, but exactly why is complex. If we view the state of our teeth on a linear timeline, there will be a point in time before and after the wisdom teeth have erupted (assuming that you have them). Here are the two points in time and how they relate to your orthodontics.

Wisdom Teeth Erupting Before Orthodontics

Usually, if wisdom teeth erupt before serious treatment is started or completed, they will be the first thing to be treated. This is because they tend to cause the most discomfort during their healing process. Leaving them in and beginning treatments is a bad time because they can shift and push your teeth out of alignment, making any other treatments harder.

Wisdom Teeth Erupting After Orthodontics

If you were considering waiting until your wisdom teeth erupted to have braces installed, think again. The best time to be outfitted with braces is before your wisdom teeth come in, and that is because braces will move your teeth into their correct, permanent positions. This gives them room to grow adequately and allows for the wisdom teeth to erupt without ruining ongoing treatments or causing more discomfort. There are very rare instances when removing the wisdom teeth cause reversals of dental work. These are usually only correlated with relaxing normal routines and not really the fault of having the teeth extracted.
