Earaches are Sometimes Caused by Untreated Dental ProblemsSometimes, what you perceive as an earache, relates to a dental problem. The following information elaborates on how this can happen.

Pain in the Ear Can Be Misleading

Some patients think an earache results from an ear infection or wax buildup but are surprised to find out the opposite is true—their pain results from a dental problem that has not yet been addressed. Therefore, you cannot assume that an ear infection has triggered pain in your ear. It could be something entirely different.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

Sometimes, ear pain results from a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). TMD can develop from a number of factors, including a poorly aligned bite, grinding and clenching of the teeth (bruxism), or arthritis. If you have TMD, and it causes ear pain, we need to investigate the underlying cause.

Problems with the Teeth

Ear pain may also result from tooth decay. An abscessed tooth or cavity can cause the ear to throb and hurt. In some instances, impacted wisdom teeth may be the actual cause of an earache. For instance, if you have developed a gingival abscess or apical abscess (at the root of your tooth), it can trigger an ongoing earache. The pain resulting from deep decay can reach up to the ear. If you continue to have earaches then and don't have an ear infection or wax buildup, you need to visit our dental team. We can quickly take images of the teeth to diagnose the cause of the problem.

Ear pain can be deceptive. Give us a call today to arrange a dental appointment if your family doctor cannot find a reason for your earache. If you have not had a dental appointment in the last six months, now is a good time to call us as well. We can always schedule an appointment that can be included in your daily activities.
