We have all been told to brush our teeth twice a day. In addition, we advise adding a daily flossing routine to your oral hygiene protocol. It is important to floss your teeth each day to remove food debris, sugar, and starches from between your teeth.
What Gets Stuck Between Your Teeth?
We have all had corn on the cob stuck between our teeth. I am sure many can remember a time when spinach or lettuce took residence between your teeth as well. Small seeds from fruit can easily get stuck too. We expect those things to get lodged, but did you know that sugars and starches can also penetrate the gaps between your teeth?
Causes of Tooth Decay and What You Can Do
If you do not remove sugars and starches from between your teeth, the bacteria in your mouth will feed on these delicacies and form dental plaque. If the plaque stays on your teeth, it can harden and form tartar, or calculus. Tartar is the white crusty material that the hygienist scrapes off your teeth. As tartar forms between your teeth, it can weaken the enamel and form cavities.
Floss for Healthier Teeth
By flossing your teeth daily, you can help to reduce the likelihood of plaque hardening into tartar. We suggest you floss your teeth every day in addition to brushing and rinsing. We also advise our patients to make good choices in the grocery store and to not buy foods high in sugars and starches.
