An oral biopsy is a surgical procedure done to obtain tissue from a patient's oral cavity. This is mainly for microscopic examination to perform a diagnosis. Healing from an oral biopsy depends on several factors. Read on for what it takes for an oral biopsy to heal.
Healing from an Oral Biopsy
The healing process can take between a few days to a few weeks, depending on the biopsy site. To understand where different biopsy sites are located, we shall look at the different types of biopsy procedures.
The most common type of biopsy is an incisional biopsy. This is a procedure where one of our doctors cuts out a sample tissue for testing. This procedure's location depends on where the tissue is being extracted from; it can be performed in a general anesthesia operating room or the doctor's office.
In some cases, an excisional biopsy may be performed. This is where the doctor cuts out most of the suspected area as well as the surrounding tissue. In some cases, this procedure requires stitches, which dissolve on their own within a week. Healing from this type of oral biopsy can take several weeks due to the amount of tissue removed.
Another common type of oral biopsy is exfoliative cytology. This is a simple procedure that does not need an operating room. The doctor gently scrapes cells from the suspicious area for examination. This is a quick, painless, and non-invasive method of checking oral cancer. It is even easier when the area looks only slightly suspicious. Healing from this type of oral biopsy takes a very short amount of time, mostly one to three days. It is a commonly used method to check oral cancer and other oral conditions.
