How to Eat With Dentures

Dentures make your overall smile look a lot better. Even though they look great, using dentures is a completely different matter and may have a short learning curve. You see, learning how to eat with dentures can take up to a week or even more to feel natural.

We've decided to help you out and if you follow our tips, you'll have no problem eating your favorite foods again.

Start Slow

After getting your dentures, it will play to your advantage to stick to a liquid diet. This includes foods like soup, oatmeal, pudding, apple sauce, etc. Give yourself a few days before moving on to solid foods.

Chew Evenly

Most people have a favorite side of the mouth they like to chew, but for people with dentures, this could result in the prosthetic slipping out of place. Once you start eating solid foods again, try to chew slowly and be mindful of chewing on both sides of your mouth. This will help to keep your dentures more stable.

Slice Your Food Into Smaller Bite

While you're still learning how to chew with your dentures, try to cut your food into smaller pieces. In doing so, you wouldn't feel as much pressure on your gums while you're still adjusting to them.

Be Careful Around Sticky Foods

Sticky foods such as gum, peanut butter, candies, and some berries can get trapped inside dentures and, in turn, result in infection or irritation. Don't get us wrong, we aren't stopping you from enjoying them, but make sure that you rinse your mouth and clean your dentures thoroughly afterwards.
