Fortunately, that’s just an old wives' tale! Pregnancy doesn't automatically ruin your teeth. However, it can bring about changes that increase your risk of dental problems if you aren't careful. Let's explore what's happening in your mouth during pregnancy and how to keep your smile healthy.
Hormonal Havoc and Your Gums
One of the biggest culprits affecting your oral health during pregnancy is hormones. Increased levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone can make your gums more sensitive to plaque and bacteria. This heightened sensitivity can lead to a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. Symptoms include red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.
