This usually occurs due to acidic substances in food or beverages. Tooth erosion can also be triggered by frequent vomiting since stomach acid comes into contact with the teeth. It is important to note that enamel erosion is different from tooth decay.

What Causes Enamel Erosion

The main cause of enamel erosion is acids present in the foods and beverages you consume. Your saliva works to counteract these acids and safeguard your teeth. Still, excessive consumption of acidic items coupled with improper brushing can lead to gradual degradation of the outer enamel layer. The specific foods that lead to enamel erosion include sugary treats, starchy foods like white bread, acidic foods and drinks, and carbonated sodas.

Enamel Erosion Prevention

To maintain strong teeth and prevent enamel erosion, follow these straightforward steps. Firstly, prioritize good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time and flossing every day. This routine helps reduce the presence of acid-forming bacteria in your mouth.

Secondly, opt for a nutritious, well-balanced diet and cut back on acidic, sugary, and starchy foods like soda, desserts, and potato chips. Doing so will minimize the formation of enamel-eroding acids in your mouth. You should also include dairy products such as milk and yogurt, which are abundant in calcium and phosphate, in your diet.

Lastly, increase your water intake throughout the day and rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic foods. This practice helps in displacing some of the harmful acids found in your mouth.

Enamel Erosion Treatment

If your teeth are cracked or broken due to enamel erosion, you might require cosmetic dental treatments like crowns, bridges, or veneers. These treatments involve using porcelain materials that blend with the natural color of your teeth and shield them for protection.
