How Can My Family Develop Good Brushing and Flossing Habits?

Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases of childhood, but you can teach your children great dental practices that help keep their dental health in great shape for years to come.

Good Nutrition

One of the best ways you can help your family have good oral health is to practice good nutrition through a healthy, balanced diet. If your family eats fruits and vegetables, dairy, and protein, they are setting their teeth and gums up to be healthy. Do you have a picky eater for a child? It is never too late to introduce a daily vitamin into their diets so they can get those vitamins and minerals they need.

Brushing

You can begin an oral hygiene routine with your child when they are a baby by wiping their gums each time they finish feeding. This cleans their gums and gets them ready for tooth brushing, which begins with teething and when the first teeth erupt.

You will want to model good toothbrushing and flossing habits for your young children. Be sure you are brushing for two minutes twice a day. Also, give your children the opportunity to select their own toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toothbrush holders to give them a sense of autonomy. Monitor the toothbrushing habits of your children until they know they can brush their teeth well on their own.

Flossing

Flossing can be difficult for anyone to manage because of the string floss, but also because children are learning fine motor skills. That is where flossers come in handy. There are child-friendly flossers with larger handles made for the grip of small hands. As with toothbrushes, let your children choose their own flossers, and make sure they are flossing properly before you let them try it on their own.
